The role of aesthetics in design

Ok - Cancel Comment
I guess the reason that the recent debate over ugly websites has gotten so much attention is that it goes against common sense. In emotional design, Norman argues that people will go to great lengths to adapt to the requirements of products/services that meet their aesthetic preferences. This would indicate a kind of aesthetic primacy, especially for products/services whose markets are well established.
Now, in the peculiar case of these ugly websites, a different sort of mechanism is at work. In most cases, the winners of the web these days are sites that are able to draw and sustain vibrant communities and/or solicit interesting user-generated content. Whether it s Craigslist, or MySpace or IMDB, by being the first in the space they were able to capture the community and the net result was that early success lead to later success.

Why go and how to choose a UX grad program

Del Blog Synaptic Burn
Hey there folks, I just posted something to another blog and thought people might like a pointer to it. The comment is in response to a posting about whether grad school is worth it and choosing a proper program. In general, OK-Cancel, just rocks, but I really liked this article in particular. Go to the article to see my comment. Be sure to check out the comic as well.
As I write this I think it would be worthwhile to categorize a list of schools that have programs worth looking at around the world:
Well, I’m going to Pratt Institute, so it must be good. (There are too many Industrial Design Schools to mention.)
Carnegie Mellon has both HCI and Interaction Design Programs
Stanford seems to just allow students to mix and match. Someone recently wrote a bit on the IxDG Discussion List about their experience as an undergrad at Stanford. (As a Cal grad, obviously, I would only post this because I really beleive they are offering something special.)
Interaction Design Institute Ivrea
University College London’s Interaction Centre (UCLIC)
Institute of Design, @ the Illinois Institute of Technology
Royal College of Art
There also seem to be many many other programs throughout Europe especially in Scandanavia and Holland of which I can’t remember enough of their names to do a google on them right now.

Thesaurus software used by Getty Research Institute

WebChoir is revolutionary information organizing and searching tool that enables information professionals to create and manage sophisticated data classification systems. It is a completely web-based editorial support system for managing and maintaining controlled vocabularies, classifications and thesauri, whether imported or created in-house. TermChoir can import any controlled vocabulary or data source, regardless of format, and allow easy maintenance and navigation of its structure.

The TermChoir organization and search mechanisms may be based upon either pre-defined standards or a customized, user-defined structure. TermChoir is open, scalable, secure, flexible, and multi-lingual. It supports most popular platforms and databases. Users access TermChoir either via client/server connectivity or through Internet/intranet/extranet web browser access.

TermChoir allows commercial information producers to package their intellectual property for ultimate customization by their end users, whether those end users are employees or licensed subscribers. Information architects, interface designers and information licensees then can customize their own information subject categories and classification systems, thereby creating unique, new and searchable work product and databases that originate from the pre-existing licensed vocabularies.

Hi there, Any recommendations on good, usable, thesaurus software? I've seen Multites, but I don't think you can import terms WITH relationships or even hierachical structures to that software. Anybody know of any>software that can do this?
thanks!
Ken
